The Israel Museum, Jerusalem
Schatz’s dream of a national museum came true. The Israel Museum, an outgrowth of the Bezalel Museum founded by Boris Schatz in 1912, is now the largest museum in the country. It is ranked among the world’s leading art and archaeology museums. Opened to the public in 1965, it houses major archaeological, Jewish art and fine arts collections, and has one of the most extensive holdings of biblical and Holy Land archaeology in the world. Thanks to a legacy of gifts and the generous support of patrons worldwide, the Israel Museum has built up a collection of nearly 500,000 objects in less than fifty years.
