Description
Mirandola, Saint Francis Church
Saint Francis Church was built during the 13th century. Like the adjacent convent, the church was built to host the Order of Minor Franciscan Friars which was spreading at that time. The church was rebuilt according to the updated Gothic models in the 15th century. At that time, it was elected as burial site of the Pico family whose members were first Lords then Dukes of Mirandola until the beginning of the 17th century. During the Napoleonic period, because of the suppression of the monastic orders, the church lost an important part of its interior furnishings. Today the church hosts only a few of the monumental tombs belonging to the Duchy family. Along the left aisle there are the stone sarcophagi of Spinetta (1399), Giovan Francesco (1467), Galeotto Pico (1499) and of Prendiparte Pico (1394) which in particular was made by Jacobello and Pierpaolo of Masegne. According to the typical medieval tradition, the case of each sarcophagus is topped by the reclining figure of the dead clad in his armor and accompanied by the family coat of arms. The church once contained a big altarpiece made by Francesco Bianchi Ferrari in the end of the 15th century. Part of it (Crocefissione and Noli me tangere) is now kept in the Este Gallery in Modena. The church has been mostly destroyed by the earthquake of 2012.
