Description
Modena, Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli or Paradisino Church
The church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, also known as Paradisino Church, takes its name from an ancient spring gushing near the building and started to be built from 1596. The church was originally entrusted to the Theatines, then its control passed to the Discalced Carmelites, to the Minor Friars and finally to the Congregation of the Daughters of Jesus. Inside the church, the wide nave is covered by a valuable coffering wooden vault decorated with some festoons representing fruits and flowers, Seraph heads and human faces, painted by Camillo Gavasseti at the beginning of the 17th century. In the lateral chapels, among some art works coming from other ancient churches of Modena, which went all destroyed, we mention St. Joseph’s Dream by Michele Desubleo and the Annunciation realized by Ercole dell’Abate. The area of the presbytery hosts an ancient organ pipe realized by Carlo Traeri in 1681 and the seats of the wide wooden choir built in 1778.
