Description
Modena, St. Barnaba Church
According to ancient sources, St. Barnaba Church dates back to the 13th century but a religious building dedicated to the same Saint probably existed even before, in the most important centuries of the medieval period. In 1588, the church was assigned to Minims of Saint Francis of Paola who in 1660 ordered the reconstruction of the building as we now can see it, while the façade was added only a century after. On the front, the statues representing St. Francesco of Paola, St. Augustine, St. Barnaba and St. Michael were carved by sculptor Diomiro Cignaroli. On the front door, the representation of the Faith and the Hope is of uncertain author. Inside, the church is completely decorated with moldings and paintings. The vault was built in 1708 according to the project of Jacopo Antonio Manni and Sigismondo Caula. The former is also the author of the festoons while the latter realized the allegories decorating the medallion and the chiaroscuro representing some episodes of the life of St. Barnaba. The frescoes adorning the vaults of the choir and the chapels are the result of restoration works carried out in 1838 by Luigi Manzini and Camillo Crespolani. The canary grass altars as well as the multicolor marbles are decorated with paintings dating back to the 17th and 19th century.
