Description
Modena, St. George Church
The ancient St. George Church started to be rebuilt in 1647 in order to bring a touch of gentility to the access road to Palazzo Ducale, a palace constructed a few years before on the initiative of the Duke Francis I. The church was erected to provide a place where officiating the state visits and celebrating the sovereign military victories. For that reason, its interior design, which was commissioned to architect of the Duchy Gaspare Vigarani, assisted by Galaverna, is quite complex and full of decorations and comprises big stages apt to host the musicians. The construction of the building probably finished in 1655 while the façade of the church, designed by architect Antonio Loraghi who worked at Palazzo Ducale, was terminated only in 1685. The decoration of the façade was entrusted to Andrea and Tommaso Lazzoni. The tympanum presents two sculptures representing the Faith and the Charity; the lateral alcoves host the sculptures of St. George and St. Gregorio (or St. Silvestro) while on the very top there are the sculptural works representing St. Joseph and David. Inside the church, the two lateral chapels host the altars transferred from St. Therese Church -demolished in 1806- an altarpiece by Antonio Consetti and a copy of the 18th century by Guido Reni. The interior decoration comprises also the high altar realized by Antonio and Tommaso Loraghi in 1666 and the wooden crucifix dating back to the 4th century, which is now placed in the chapel hosting the baptismal font.
