Description

Vignola, Galvani Garden

The garden annexed to Galvani’s family house was erected on one of the bastions of the old city walls of Vignola and today it still preserves its 18th century arrangement. The Galvani family came to Vignola from Ferrara at the beginning of the 15th century as entourage of Uguccione Contrari who was appointed Lord of Vignola by Niccolò III. The Galvani’s chose as their residence the Northern tower of the village. In 1775, the tower took the form of an elegant dovecote and was connected to the main building. According to the project of Giuseppe Galvani (1781-1817), the complex acquired its definitive aspect. Thanks to a bridge climbing over the underlying road, the building incorporated the garden and the SS. Sacrament Oratory, which had been suppressed by the Napoleonic government. According to ancient sources, the garden included a panoramic viewpoint with a Kaffeehaus, a greenery theatre, a collection of plants and some paths allowing amazing panoramic walks. After Giuseppe Galvani’s death, the property of the complex passed to many different privates. However, the complex preserved its original asset over time.
