Description

Modena, Luigi Poletti Library

The library was created in 1872 according to the will and testament of Luigi Poletti. The architect  imagined the construction of an architecture and history of art library in his home town and provided a fund which would have increased the library’s book heritage. The new library had its first seat in the rooms of the Town Hall. Then, in 1924, it was moved to Palazzo dei Musei, where it now is situated, occupying the rooms of the former Este Gallery which have been dedicated to Luigi Poletti. Today the library still focuses on the fields of architecture and history of art and counts nearly 100,000 modern volumes as well as a considerable ancient heritage. In particular, its special fund is composed of 16,000 volumes going from the 16th to the 19th century, 4000 prints, 1000 maps, 4000 drawings and architectural designs, 20,000 photographs and 900 art books. The library also contains some other important funds. The Allegretti Fund gathers Franco Allegretti’s personal book collection and its correspondence with artists and critics as President of Amici dell’Arte Association of Modena (1947-1977). The Tonini Fund provides a portrait of the history of Modena during the 20th century through a collection of photographs, postcards, brochures, newspapers, dialect pieces and satirical magazines, post-war posters and political leaflets. Finally, the library hosts some funds containing the documentation related to the professional activity of some important local designers. Among them there are the Franca Stagi Fund and the Vinicio Vecchi Fund.
