Modena’s cathedral was an important place providing ecclesiastic music during the entire medieval period. Music and dance scenes are symbolically represented in the external sculptures of the building, on the capitols and on the Porta dei Principi (Princes Door). They can be also found on the external reliefs of the Ghirlandina Tower and on the Capitello dei giudici (Judges capitol), in the Torresani Room. The activity of the Cathedral is strongly linked to the Capitolare Archive, where there is a rich music fund, extremely important for the studies in the field of local ancient music. In particular, the Archive contains handwritten records about music played in the Romanic period as well as a wide range of documents about local music culture during the 16th century when the Cathedral included some important chapel masters. The Archive’s main music funds includes some handwritten codes dating back to the period going from the 12th and the 20th century, some musical prints dated since 1516, some chapel masters’ musical scores and some liturgical codes coming from local institutions like parishes, confraternities and the local Seminary.
